A Brief History of Caterpillar
Caterpillar traces its roots to the agricultural steam tractors of the 1890s. Benjamin Holt developed the first successful caterpillar track in 1904, and the "Caterpillar" name was coined when a photographer observed the tracks rolling like a caterpillar. The Holt company's track-type tractors played a vital support role in World War I, hauling artillery across the battlefields of Europe.
In 1925, Holt merged with competitor C. L. Best to form the Caterpillar Tractor Company. The company rapidly expanded through the Great Depression and World War II, and went global in the 1950s. Today, Caterpillar products are sold through 220 independent dealers in nearly 200 countries.
Key milestones:
- 1904 — Benjamin Holt tests first successful track-type tractor
- 1925 — Caterpillar Tractor Company formed from Holt and Best merger
- 1931 — First diesel-powered tractor introduced (Caterpillar Diesel Sixty)
- 1950 — First overseas operations established
- 1998 — Acquired Perkins Engines (small diesel engines)
- 2011 — Acquired Bucyrus International (mining equipment) for $8.8 billion
- 2022 — Headquarters relocated to Irving, Texas
