Caterpillar Parts Identification Guide
Finding the right spare part for your Caterpillar machine starts with proper identification. This guide explains how to use your machine's serial number, Cat parts books and part numbers to order with confidence.
Step 1: Identify Your Machine
Before ordering any part, you need three pieces of information:
- Model number — e.g. 320, D6, 950 (see our Model Number Guide)
- Serial number — found on the machine data plate (e.g. ZBH00001)
- Arrangement number — also on the data plate, identifies the specific build configuration
Step 2: Understanding Cat Part Numbers
Caterpillar part numbers follow several formats:
- Numeric — Example: 1R-0750 • Description: Standard Cat part number with prefix and dash
- Prefix codes — Example: 1R, 4P, 5I, 7C, 8T, 9X • Description: Indicate part category (filter, seal, gasket etc.)
- Superseded — Example: Old numbers redirect to current stock numbers
Common Part Number Prefixes
- 1R: Filters (oil, fuel, hydraulic)
- 4P: Electrical components
- 5I: Undercarriage (excavators, dozers)
- 7C: Seals and O-rings
- 8T: Hydraulic components
- 9X: Transmission parts
Step 3: OEM vs Aftermarket Parts
Genuine Cat parts are manufactured to Caterpillar specifications and come with Cat warranty. They are identified by the Cat logo and genuine Cat part number.
Aftermarket parts are manufactured by third parties to match or exceed OEM specifications. They often offer significant cost savings on service items like filters, seals and brake components while maintaining quality.
At BuyAnyPart, we supply both genuine and aftermarket Caterpillar parts, clearly labelled so you can choose the option that best suits your needs and budget.
