Understanding Merlo Model Numbers

Not sure which model you have? Read our guide to Understanding Merlo Model Numbers — it explains how to decode the series prefix, load capacity and lift height from any Merlo model number.

Identifying Your Merlo Engine

Merlo telehandlers use engines from Deutz and Kubota — and the same model number with a different suffix can have a completely different engine. Getting the right service parts (filters, oil, belts) depends on knowing exactly which engine is in your machine.

Read our guide to How to Find Your Merlo Engine Type — it explains where to find your engine identification plate, which engines are fitted to which Panoramic models, and what information you need when ordering engine parts.

A Brief History of Merlo

Merlo was founded in 1964 in Cuneo, Italy, by Amilcare Merlo and his sister Natalina. The company began by manufacturing dumpers and concrete mixers before producing their first telescopic handler, the SM30, in 1981.

In 1987, the Panoramic XS introduced the side-engine layout and low-hinged boom that became synonymous with Merlo design. The rotating Roto handler followed in 1991, and the Multifarmer tractor-telehandler hybrid launched in 2000.

Today, Merlo operates from a 2.4 million ft² factory in San Defendente di Cervasca, Piedmont, and their machines are used in over 150 countries worldwide. The company remains family-owned and continues to lead in hydrostatic transmission technology, operator-centric cab design and precision control systems.

A Brief History of Merlo

Founding and early development (1960s–1980s)

Merlo was founded in 1964 in Cuneo, Italy, beginning as a manufacturer of innovative telehandler machines and heavy equipment. From the start, the company focused on in-house design and production — a philosophy that would later become one of its defining strengths, ensuring high quality and technological independence. Through the 1970s and 1980s Merlo expanded steadily, building out the vertically-integrated manufacturing capability that allowed it to design, test and produce most components internally.

Rise of the telehandler specialist (1990s–2000s)

Over time Merlo became widely recognised for its telehandler technology, moving from general heavy machinery into specialised material-handling solutions for agriculture, construction, logistics and industry. The company developed its now well-known product lines:

These product families established Merlo as one of the industry's leading innovators.

Modern growth and global expansion (2000s–present)

Merlo continued to grow internationally, establishing distribution and support networks across Europe, North America and beyond. A notable modern milestone was the expansion of the manufacturing footprint at San Defendente di Cervasca, Piedmont, Italy — a factory of approximately 2.4 million square feet that includes a dedicated research and training centre.

Today Merlo machines are used across agriculture, construction and industrial logistics worldwide. The company is known for:

  • Advanced hydrostatic transmissions
  • Operator-centric cab design
  • Innovations such as boom side-shift, active suspension and precision control systems
  • The vertical integration that maintains high quality and reliability
  • The eWorker electric compact telehandler — part of Merlo's Generation Zero zero-emissions programme
