How to Find Your Merlo Telehandler Engine Type
Knowing which engine is fitted to your Merlo telehandler is essential when ordering service parts such as oil filters, fuel filters, and air filters. Merlo uses engines from different manufacturers across its range, so the correct filter for one machine may be completely wrong for another — even within the same model line.
This guide explains how to identify your engine and why it matters when ordering parts.
Why Your Engine Type Matters
Merlo telehandlers are fitted with diesel engines manufactured by Deutz or Kubota, depending on the model and year of production. These engines have different:
- Oil filters — different thread sizes and filter media
- Fuel filters — different flow rates and fitting types
- Air filters — different housing dimensions
- Engine oil specifications — different grades and capacities
- Service intervals — set by the engine manufacturer, not Merlo
Merlo's own maintenance manual states that for engine-specific service intervals and procedures, operators should "always refer to the engine manual supplied as standard with the machine". This means the engine manufacturer's documentation is the definitive source for engine servicing schedules.
Step 1: Find Your Engine Identification Plate
Every Merlo telehandler has an engine identification plate attached to the upper part of the engine itself. According to the official Merlo operator's manual, this plate provides:
- Engine manufacturer and model number
- Engine serial number
- Power output and rated speed
- Emissions compliance level
Where to look: Open the engine compartment (usually accessed from the rear or side of the machine) and look for a metal plate or sticker on the top of the engine block. The plate is typically riveted or adhesive-mounted.
When contacting the engine manufacturer for parts or technical support, you will need the data shown on this identification plate.
Step 2: Find Your Machine Chassis Number
Your Merlo chassis number (also called the serial number or SAV number) is equally important. It is printed on the front right side of the chassis frame, coated with a layer of black paint.
When ordering parts from any supplier, always have both:
- Your machine model number (e.g. P40.17 Plus)
- Your chassis/SAV number
Components can vary between production runs of the same model, so the chassis number ensures you receive exactly the right parts.

- Emissions: Stage IIIA / Tier 3
- Fitted to: P38.13 EE, P40.17 EE, P60.10 EE, P72.10 EE
Important Notes
- The Plus suffix generally indicates models with the Deutz engine, while the EE suffix indicates models with the higher-powered Kubota engine.
- The same model number without a suffix (e.g. P40.17 vs P40.17 Plus vs P40.17 EE) can have a completely different engine. This is why checking your engine identification plate is critical.
- These are the engines documented in the Panoramic manual referenced above. Merlo regularly updates its range, and newer production runs may use different engine variants.
Other Merlo Series
Merlo's Turbofarmer, Roto, Multifarmer, and eWorker ranges use various engine configurations. The engine identification plate on your specific machine is always the definitive reference, regardless of series.
